Art Battle 2014

I was fortunate to be able to be a part of this year’s Art Battle – Whitehorse.  So truly amazing artists pulled off some fantastic artworks in 20 minutes… with crowds hovering (and me doing my best not to get in the way).  Thanks to Amber Church & Raven Mad Designs for pulling this all together.

And a huge thank-you to all the volunteers that made this event possible.  Christopher, Jodie, Heather, Casey & Tim… you guys are great!

And of course a hearty congratulations to John Boivin for the well deserved victory!  See you at the Art Battle Canada Finals!!!

Fairwell to Equinox Rox

It’s a bit scary to think that Chris Gishler’s Equinox Rox climbing wall and zipline went up 11 years ago.  But like so many good things, they must come to an end.  And to be able to be there at the beginning and the end, is always bittersweet.  But it was a beautiful day for a fairwell, and a fundraiser for a great cause (http://www.protectpeel.ca/).

And for me, as a photographer, the zipline gave me my first cover photo on What’s Up Yukon, so after 11 years, I thought it would be fun to try and capture a few similar shots.  Hope you enjoy.

(Note: It is just the climbing wall and zipline at the Hot Springs that is coming to an end.  Equinox Rox will keep on going… and undoubtedly find a new a better location.)

Chasing the winter skies

Sometimes we forget there is more to the Yukon’s winter skies than just northern lights.  In fact, it can be a bit difficult to get away from them!

As we inch (or leap) closer to summer, and our infamous midnight sun and a few month hiatus in my astrophotography aspirations, I thought I would take a quick moment to look back on a couple of my favourite aurora-free photos from this winter.  Hope you enjoy!

Chasing the Overland Train Aurora

There are some photos that prove illusive.  They require a specific set of conditions, and of course actually being there when those conditions occur.  The Yukon Transportation Museum’s USA Military Overland Train, has been tempting me with one of those illusive images for quite some time–a photo of the aurora visible over the train.

Hard Water Canoeing Championships 2014

This year, the Hard Water Canoeing race returned to Rendezvous.  Sadly our team, put in a valiant effort, but did not make it through to the next round.  But on the plus side, it gave me a chance to catch some photos of the event.  It was a blast!  Thanks to Kanoe People for putting it on (and providing canoes)!

2014 Rendezvous Queens talent show

This years Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous queen contestants showing off what a proper pageant is all about.  From carpentry and plumbing to poetry and dance, with a little martial arts thrown in for good measure.  And of course, what pageant would be complete with out a firearm?

YSR Snowshoe Shufflers putting on a show

The Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous’ Snowshow Shufflers put on quite a show at the Trappers Lounge.  I do love organized chaos, even if it’s only loosely organized!
